How does a dimmer with a triac circuit work?
Dimmers currently sold use a triac circuit. In a triac circuit, the AC voltage is interrupted briefly each time the AC voltage passes through zero.
When the dimmer switch is turned or moved, this interruption becomes longer or shorter, causing the lamp to start flickering very rapidly. This flickering is not perceptible; however, what is perceptible is that the lamp burns brightly or less brightly.
Dimming lighting using a triac circuit is also referred to as the Phase Cutting technique. Phase cutting means that at the beginning of each oscillation, i.e. at zero, the alternating voltage is interrupted for a very brief moment; see also the image below.
