Infographic: What is a flicker-free LED driver?

An LED driver is the electronics that convert the 230V mains voltage into the constant current or voltage that LEDs need. A flicker-free driver delivers that current so steadily that the light output does not fluctuate with the mains. The result is calm light without visible or invisible flicker.

The driver converts mains voltage into a constant current for the LEDs.

What does an LED driver do?

  • converts alternating current into direct current,
  • delivers a constant current or constant voltage,
  • protects the LEDs against voltage spikes and overheating,
  • enables dimming in dimmable versions.

What makes a driver flicker-free?

A cheap driver lets some of the mains ripple through, making the LEDs slightly brighter and dimmer hundreds of times per second. A flicker-free driver has better smoothing and stable current control, keeping that ripple to a minimum.

The driver determines the lifespan

In LED lighting, the driver is often the first component to fail, not the LED itself. A quality driver, for example from a well-known brand, therefore extends the lifespan of the entire luminaire.

What to look out for

  • "Flicker-free" in the specifications.
  • A driver from a well-known brand or with certification, such as TÜV or ENEC.
  • For dimming: the right dimming system (for example 1-10V or DALI).

Frequently asked questions

Does every LED need a driver?

Yes. In LED bulbs the driver is built into the bulb; with panels and luminaires it is often a separate box.

Can I replace a driver separately?

With many luminaires, yes, provided the new driver delivers the same current and voltage.

Why does an LED luminaire fail?

The driver is often the cause, not the LEDs themselves.
