Infographic: What is an LED spotlight?

An LED spotlight is a lamp or luminaire that emits light in a directed beam, rather than all around. Spotlights are used for general lighting in ceilings and for accent lighting of, for example, a worktop, painting or product display. There are separate spotlight bulbs, such as GU10, and complete recessed and surface-mounted spotlights.

Types of LED spotlight bulbs

TypeVoltageCharacteristic
GU10230Vtwist-lock with two pins; most widely used at home
MR16 (GU5.3)12Vtwo thin push-in pins; transformer or driver required
AR111230V (GU10) or 12V (G53)large reflector of approx. 111 mm; powerful accent lighting

Beam angle: wide or narrow?

The beam angle determines how wide the beam of light is. A wide beam (60° or more) is suitable for general lighting. A narrow beam (24° to 38°) gives concentrated light for accents, such as an artwork or a product in a shop.

Recessed or surface-mounted spotlight?

A recessed spotlight sits flush in the ceiling and gives a clean finish. A surface-mounted spotlight is fixed onto the ceiling or wall and is ideal for concrete ceilings or where there is too little recess depth. Tilting or adjustable spotlights let you aim the light precisely.

Tips for choosing

  • Compare lumens: a 50 W halogen GU10 gives approx. 350 lumens.
  • Choose K3000 warm white for living spaces and K4000 for kitchens and workplaces.
  • If you want to dim, choose a dimmable spotlight and an LED-compatible dimmer.
  • In the bathroom, choose a spotlight with a suitable IP rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GU10 and GU5.3?

GU10 runs on 230V with a twist-lock. GU5.3 (MR16) runs on 12V with two thin push-in pins and needs a transformer.

How many LED spotlights do I need?

For general lighting, place spotlights approx. 1 to 1.5 metres apart. For accents, a few directed spotlights are enough.

Can I replace halogen spotlights with LED?

Yes. Choose the same cap and a similar number of lumens. With 12V, check that the transformer is suitable for LED.
