GU10 recessed spotlights are fittings that you build into a suspended ceiling, wooden ceiling or cabinet and fit with a GU10 LED lamp of your choice. The light source is not included, so you choose the wattage, colour temperature and, if required, a dimmable lamp yourself. One fitting therefore works in living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, shops and offices.

Cut-out size and installation depth

The cut-out size is listed for every spotlight; for round spots it is usually between 75 and 90 millimetres. Allow for the installation depth: the fitting itself is often 45 to 55 millimetres deep and the GU10 lamp with lamp holder sticks out a little further, so plan at least 70 to 80 millimetres of free space above the ceiling. Tiltable spots are useful above a worktop or to light a painting or wall, fixed spots give a calm ceiling.

IP20 or IP65: indoor, bathroom and outdoor

An IP20 spotlight is intended for dry indoor rooms. In the bathroom, above the shower or outdoors under a canopy, choose an IP65 spotlight, which is sealed against splashing water and moisture. Always use a fitting with the right IP rating in wet zones and have the connection made by a qualified electrician if in doubt.

Choosing the right GU10 lamp

Because the light source is chosen separately, you decide how much light the spot gives. A 5 to 7 watt GU10 LED lamp gives about 400 to 600 lumens, comparable to a 35 to 50 watt halogen spot. For living areas choose 2700 or 3000 kelvin warm white, for kitchens, bathrooms and commercial spaces 4000 kelvin. If you want to dim, choose a dimmable lamp and a suitable LED dimmer. See our GU10 LED lamps for matching light sources.

How many spotlights do you need?

For ambient and general lighting in a living room, count on roughly one spot per 1.5 to 2 square metres, in a kitchen or bathroom roughly one spot per 1 to 1.5 square metres. Keep about 1 to 1.2 metres between spots and about half that distance from the wall. Send the dimensions of your room to info@dimay.com and we will advise on the number of spots and lamps.

Is the lamp included with the GU10 recessed spotlight?

No, the GU10 recessed spotlights are supplied without a light source. You choose a GU10 LED lamp with the wattage and colour temperature you need.

Can I use a GU10 recessed spotlight in the bathroom?

Which cut-out size do I need?
