LED strips: flexible lighting for every project

An LED strip is a flexible tape fitted with LEDs that you can cut to size and stick to almost any surface. It is ideal for indirect lighting in ceilings and walls, under kitchen cabinets, along stairs, in display cases, behind the headboard of a bed, behind the television, in illuminated signage and in shops. In this category you will find 12V and 24V LED strips in a range of light colours, wattages and protection ratings.

For a working installation you will also need a power supply and, if you want to dim or change colour, a controller. You will find these under LED strip power supplies and LED strip accessories.

Types of LED strips

  • Single colour: warm, neutral or cool white; the simplest choice for indirect light.
  • CCT (tunable white): switch between warm and cool white with a controller.
  • RGB and RGBW: millions of colours; RGBW adds a pure white.
  • COB: LEDs placed close together for an even line of light without visible dots.
  • Waterproof: rated IP65 or higher for bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor use.

Choosing the right LED strip

  • Voltage: 24V is better for long runs; 12V for short runs or existing systems.
  • Wattage (W/m): low wattage for ambience, high wattage for functional lighting.
  • LED density: more LEDs per metre give a more even line of light.
  • Light colour: 2700–3000 K for a cosy warm light, 4000 K for kitchens and workspaces.
  • IP rating: IP20 for dry indoor areas, IP65 or higher for damp locations.
  • CRI: CRI 90 or higher for kitchens, shops and display cases.

Installation

Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly before applying the strip. Only cut at the marked cutting points. Ideally, mount the strip in an aluminium profile for good heat dissipation. Feed power to long runs at both ends or at several points so the light does not become dimmer towards the end. Choose a power supply with at least 20% spare capacity.

Frequently asked questions

How many metres of LED strip can I connect in one run?
That depends on the voltage and the wattage. The product information states the maximum length per feed point.

Can I use an LED strip in the bathroom?
Yes, with a waterproof strip whose IP rating is suitable for the zone.

What is the difference between a COB strip and a standard strip?
On a COB strip the LEDs sit so close together that you see an even line of light, even without a diffuser.
